Wehle had no coding knowledge entering the development of The First Tree. Wehle, was inspired by Journey, Gone Home, and Firewatch, as well as the novel The Road. In his spare time, he developed and marketed The First Tree. However, it did result in Wehle being hired as a technical artist for the VR experience developer The VOID. Wehle previously developed and released Home is Where One Stars in 2015, though it did not garner much attention or profit. The game was largely produced by one individual, Utah-based developer David Wehle. There are also some puzzle and platforming elements to the game. Joe Donnelly of PC Gamer referred to the game as a "walking" and " bounding" simulator, as players follow the fox as she gallops through a natural landscape. The train only receives seconds of play because all it does is move in a circle. The ornaments look as though they might hang, but instead they simply rest on the tree and fall off very easily. It is a very simplistic toy with no engaging features. However, the tree has minimal use: play is very limited and only holds a child’s attention for a small time. My older daughters enjoy looking at the tree and both would like it in their bedrooms. My infant son likes to stand at the tree and it is pretty sturdy with a nice, wide base that doesn’t tip. It makes a fun holiday decoration for children to see. It has large pieces that are safe for a small child. Unlike most children’s toys, the tree is extremely quick to assemble – it took mere seconds. The My First Christmas Tree is a unique and darling holiday item.
